When I was asked by my friend Amy of Mod Podge rocks if I would try out her new stencil line, I did not hesitate before saying yes. Did you read that? She has her OWN stencil! Amazing! I chose the wood grain stencil. I created the perfect Mod Podge stencil wall art as the beginning piece for my bedroom makeover! Let me show you how easy these stencils are to use. And did I mention they are reusable? Yup they are, I have actually used mine for multiple projects already! Who knew you could use wood grain all over your house! {the giveaway entry options are listed at the BOTTOM of this post}
supplies needed:
apple barrel paint
canvas
paint brush
paint tray
spouncer
freezer paper
mod podge wood grain stencil
Before we begin I want to clarify I did have a few trial and error (heavy on the error) moments when first using my stencil. Since then I have it down. Don’t worry I documented the whole process so you can see what went wrong. (it had nothing to do with the stencil, completely user error)
First you need to remove the stencil from its plastic backing, save this plastic for storing your stencil when you are finished using it! I love how it’s sticky and does not move around. Yet it is repositionable.
Next mix your paint. I used black, brown and white to get the perfect shade of taupe. Dab your spouncer gently in the paint.
Start “spouncing” on your paint right over the stencil. Is spouncing even a word? Good thing you knew what I was talking about. Cover the whole stencil with paint.
After about 10 minutes, because you were distracted by kids, gently lift your stencil off your canvas. Make a sad face because your lines are not crisp. Wash off your stencil with warm water and soap. pat dry and place on canvas where wood grain pattern ends. Spounce more paint on the stencil and remove right away.
Take a look at the difference it makes depending on how fast you remove the stencil. I also think I used slight less paint, but I am not sure! Now Is when you decide that you want all crisp lines. So you paint the whole wood grain stencil part in a solid taupe color.
Using the same stencil and slightly darker shade of taupe, place the stencil on the solid tree trunk and spounce on the darker paint. Remember to remove the stencil fast and line up your lines just right.
I used some white paint and added a little heart with our initials in it. I also dated the canvas, it made it seem more professional. LOL
Next using your freezer paper make a stencil with the words, madly. truly. deeply. I used my silhouette to make the stencil but you can hand cut them as well. Iron your stencil shiny side down onto your canvas, be careful NOT to iron your painted tree.
This is when you also learn that freezer paper does not stick well to canvas. Oh well, I went with it. Spounce your taupe on the stenciled words.
After you remove your stencil you may notice that your words are NOT crisp. You can either leave it, and call it organic or have a OCD moment and NEED to clean it up!
Using the worlds smallest paint brush and some white paint I cleaned up all the fuzzy lines.
Now you can Stand back and admire your work. If you are like me you had to listen to a tween make puking sounds because the sign grossed her out. Oh kids, life could be much worse.
I love it. My husband loves it, or at least he says he does, Good boy. The canvas is currently sitting on our dresser. I love seeing it each morning. It’s a constant reminder of the love we have that ONLY God could have ordained.
